Unlocking the Potential in a Gamification-Based MOOC: Assessing Autonomous Learning and Self-Directed Learning Behaviors

By Joko Slamet, Yazid Basthomi, Francisca Maria Ivone, Evi Eliyanah.

Our exploration of gamification in massive open online courses (MOOCs) was driven by a commitment to reshape online education. This study, part of the first author’s dissertation at Universitas Negeri Malang in Indonesia, was led by Dr. Yazid Basthomi, and funded by DRTPM (Direktorat Riset, Teknologi, dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat) in collaboration with Universitas Negeri Malang. We embarked on a collaborative venture to explore the intersections of technology and pedagogy. Our study benefited significantly from a gamified MOOC hosted on the LearnovaUM platform (https://umlearninginnovation.com/). This platform provided invaluable resources and insights as we investigated the gamification dynamics within the “English for IT Professionals” course. Tailored to empower information technology (IT) students and professionals with the essential language skills for success, this course integrated gamification elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards to enhance participant engagement.

What set our research apart was its rigorous methodology and interdisciplinary approach. Drawing upon self-determination theory (SDT) as our theoretical framework, we delved deep into the intricate relationship between gamification elements and learner engagement, autonomy, and motivation. Our findings illuminated the transformative potential of gamification within MOOCs, revealing their ability to foster intrinsic motivation and stimulate self-directed learning behaviors. Through a blend of quantitative and qualitative analyses, we uncovered the nuanced dynamics at play within the gamified learning environment.

As scholars committed to advancing education, we were driven by the opportunity to transform online learning. Our approach aimed to meet the evolving needs of learners while resonating with practitioners and policymakers. Recognizing the influence of our cultural context, we drew upon our rich heritage and contextualized our findings within Indonesian education. Reflecting on our journey fills us with pride, and we hope our research will inspire change. By sharing our insights, we aspire to pave the way for a more innovative and inclusive future in online learning.
