ISSOTL's Discussion Group
“ISSOTL-Open-Discussion” is ISSOTL’s public discussion group, launched in July 2024. Like its previous listserv, this discussion group is open to ISSOTL members and non-members who are interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
Purpose & Parameters
“ISSOTL-Open-Discussion” is a member-led group for subscribers to exchange ideas and information about SoTL. Subscribers are invited to post questions, responses, resources, and announcements related to SoTL or to those interested in SoTL.
To respect fellow subscribers’ time and inbox management, subscribers should refrain from posting about other topics.
ISSOTL members will continue to receive Society announcements, the monthly newsletter, and other ISSOTL news directly through email.
The Platform
“ISSOTL-Open-Discussion” is a Google Group that supports threaded discussions via email, as well as on a web interface. The web interface archives the discussions chronologically by threads that are defined by the subject lines of the messages.
As an international organization, ISSOTL tested the Google Group with ISSOTL members in contexts that restrict the use of Google products, and all email messages were successfully sent and received.

- If you are having difficulty, please reach out to us directly at issotl.communications@gmail.com, and we can add you manually.
How to Send a Message
- To start a new conversation, compose your email in your email platform, use a clear topic in your Subject line, and send your message to issotl-discussion@issotl.com.
- To reply to someone and everyone else in the group, use your email’s “reply all.”
- To reply just to the person who sent the message, use your email’s “reply,” and check to make sure your message isn’t also going to the whole group.
How to Use a Non-Google Account
You do not need a Google account to send and receive messages through “ISSOTL-Open-Discussion.” (We may need to add you manually, though. See the “How to Subscribe” instructions above.)
That said, Google Groups work best if you have a Google account, so we recommend the following:
- Create a Google account by following these instructions.
- Connect it to your non-Google account by going to this Google Account Help page, scrolling down to “Add an alternate email address,” and following those instructions.
[If any of these instructions don’t work, or if you’re having difficulty, please email us at issotl.communications@gmail.com if any of these instructions don’t work.]
