The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is helping to change the direction of higher education around the world. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Kennesaw State University is proud to be hosting ISSOTL 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta’s dynamic fusion of traditional southern charm with a culturally diverse, inclusive community serves as the perfect backdrop for ISSOTL 2019. The theme, SoTL Without Borders: Engaged Practices for Social Change, aims to examine global teaching practices in a meaningful way in the heart of the city of Atlanta.
Atlanta features institutions, landmarks, and businesses that contribute to this dialogue. As a social and political center, Atlanta is home to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change; the Center for Civil and Human Rights, dedicated to the achievements of both the US Civil Rights Movement, and human rights movements worldwide; the AIDS Memorial Quilt, an enormous quilt that raises awareness and celebrates the lives of people who have died of AIDS; and the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, which houses the former presidents’ papers and Nobel peace prize.
As a diverse center of the arts, Atlanta offers the High Museum of Arts and Woodruff Performing Arts Center, as well as the Fox Theatre and street art of the Krog Street Tunnel.
Atlanta is a prominent center for excellence and education. Georgia Tech ranks in the nation’s top ten list for STEM programs. Emory University is a nationally renowned private institution that operates the largest healthcare system in the state. The Atlanta University Center is the world’s largest consortium of African American private institutions of higher education, including Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.
During ISSOTL 2019, you will be steps away from Atlanta’s MARTA rail system, connecting you to the world’s busiest airport, and Centennial Olympic Park, a 21-acre public space built for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The park is surrounded by many major Atlanta landmarks, including the Georgia World Congress Center, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, College Football Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the western hemisphere.
Atlanta is diverse and dynamic with cosmopolitan energy and multicultural history offering bold encounters in a beautiful setting. We invite you to attend ISSOTL 2019: SoTL Without Borders, October 9th through 12th in Atlanta, Georgia.
