Information for Presenters

All presenters should be familiar with ISSOTL’s conference pedagogy as they prepare for their conference sessions.

For panel, workshop, and paper/inquiry presentations, presenters will need to bring their own laptop to present. Each room is equipped with a smart lectern that includes an HDMI cable for you to connect to and run your presentation from. If your laptop does not have a HDMI connection, you will need to bring your own HDMI adaptor to ensure it connects.

Presenting a Poster

Poster presenters are asked to bring a poster to pin or attach to a poster panel. At least one author must be present during the poster session to engage with conference delegates. QR codes or handouts can be used to allow participants to take away key ideas from the poster.

Preferred Poster Size is A0 (A-Zero) [841 × 1189 mm or 33.1 × 46.8 in] in Portrait Orientation. For paper sizes, please see: https://papersizes.io/a/. We will be able to accommodate other sizes and orientations, but this is the standard size and orientation for our conference center space.

Posters should be put on display starting Monday afternoon, 3 Nov. Please ensure your posters are on display by the beginning of the poster session at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, 4 Nov.

If you need to print your poster after arriving in Christchurch, we suggest using Warehouse Stationery in the South City Mall. It is open 7 days a week and offers a competitive price, and is not too far from the Te Pae Convention Centre:

Presenting a Pre-Conference Workshop

Pre-conference Workshops have a dedicated 3-hour allotment, and participants pay a fee in addition to conference registration to attend. These are extended opportunities to engage participants in hands-on explorations of topics and take place the day prior to the conference opening. Rooms will be set “banquet style” with tables for 10 participants to work together at each table. A screen will be available for presentation purposes, and presenters are asked to bring their own device to connect to the projection system. The room capacity will be 80 people.

Chart paper and markers are available at the registration desk on request if you need these materials for your session pedagogy.

Presenting a Workshop

Workshops will be 90-minute sessions and provide participants with a highly-engaged and interactive opportunity to explore or work on a SoTL question, research method, or topic.

Presenting a Panel Session

Panel Sessions will be 90 minutes and will provide participants with the opportunity to engage with multiple perspectives and an active exchange of ideas. Panels will include at least three panellists and a moderator seated at the front of the room. A screen will be available for presentation purposes, and presenters are asked to bring their own device to connect to the projection system. Rooms will be set up “theatre style” with rows of seats facing a presentation screen. Room capacity will be 90 people.

Presenting a Round Table Session

Roundtables will be organized in 90-minute sessions. Three presentations will be thematically grouped at a table, and each presenter will have 30 minutes to share and engage in discussion about their work in progress. This is somewhat like an inquiry/paper session, but more discussion-centred and less formally presented. There will not be a presentation screen, so presenters are encouraged to bring a handout, use shared online documents, or work from their laptop screen if they need to share a working document or visual image. Roundtables will be organized in an open plan space with multiple tables engaged simultaneously. Each table will have 10 chairs with the ability to add more chairs as needed.

Presenting in an Inquiry/Paper Session

Three presentations will be scheduled into a 90-minute themed session. Each presentation should be no longer than 30 minutes and is typically organized to have a 20-minute presentation with a 10-minute follow-on discussion. These presentations provide an opportunity to share results of SoTL projects on teaching or inquiry practices. These sessions allow presenters to share knowledge and facilitate dialogue with session participants. Presenters should bring their own laptop or device to connect to the projection system in the room. Rooms will be set in “theatre style” with rows of seats facing a presentation screen. Room capacity will be 60-90 people.
