Keynote Speakers
Gordon A. Martell, PhD
Gordon is from the Waterhen Lake Cree First Nation in Treaty Six Territory. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Saskatchewan where he focusses on Indigenous education, instructional leadership, governance, and organizational development. He has served in a variety of leadership capacities in his over 30 years in band-controlled and provincial education, including as a Superintendent of Education for twenty years. His recognitions in education and community service include the Saskatchewan Centennial Leadership Award, the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Excellence in Aboriginal Initiatives Award; Indspire’s Guiding the Journey Indigenous Educator Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for community service in healthcare, policing, philanthropy, and community development. Gordon advises communities in the development of on-reserve First Nations education systems and mentors early career Indigenous educational leaders. Mostly, his contributions have focussed on enhancing teaching and learning through community engagement, liberative teaching, and the protection and proliferation of Indigenous knowledges as global contributions to peaceful and sustainable communities.
Anne Tierney
Anne Tierney is an Associate Professor in the Learning & Teaching Academy at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally a botanist, she became interested in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as a means to academic legitimacy for Teaching and Scholarship academics. Her work includes Threshold Concepts associated with SoTL and the impact of research cultures on teaching-focused academics. Her role at Heriot-Watt includes supporting colleagues in scholarship, making connections between SoTL and educational leadership. Anne is currently the Co-chair of the Scottish Micro-credentials Tertiary Education Network, working with colleges and universities to develop a framework for small qualifications for the Scottish sector, and collaborating with colleagues across the UK and Europe. She is also the current president of Improving University Teaching, an annual international conference which promotes and supports the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
