The canals and city of Utrecht

About Utrecht

We are looking forward to welcoming ISSOTL participants to our beautiful city. Utrecht is a wonderful historic town offering medieval architecture and unique treasures dating back to Roman times, bristling with restaurants and shops, creating an inviting, endearing and lively ambiance. Lonely Planet ranks Utrecht in their top-10 of the world’s most unsung places! Crowd-pleasers include the centuries-old wharf cellars – unique in the world – where travellers can now enjoy drinks and dine out, and our famous 700-year-old Dom Tower. It is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, and it offers stellar views on sunny days. Most of Utrecht University’s students live off-campus in the city itself, contributing to Utrecht’s youthful and dynamic energy. Although the city is rapidly growing, it is easy to navigate for newcomers, and the historic city centre can be discovered easily by foot—in other words, everything one could wish for is nearby. Most hotels also offer bike rental if you would like to explore the city by bike. If you have signed up for the conference, we will share our favourite local restaurants and other hotspots with you in the months to come.
